Discuss Seal and ribbon


原文：印绶喜其生身，正偏同为美格，故财与印不分偏正，同为一格而论之。印绶之格局亦不一，有印而透官者，正官不独取其生印，而即可以为用，与用煞者不同。故身旺印强，不愁太过，只要官星清纯，如丙寅、戊戌、辛酉、戊子，张参政之命是也。

Seal and ribbon likes to engender Self, Direct or Indirect are both beautiful structures, that is because for Wealth and Seal, Direct and Indirect are not separated (analyzed as different structures). There are many types of Seal structure, there is a Seal structure with protruding Officer, Officer is not only for engendering Seal, it is also Usable (as a Useful God), that is different from using Devil. Thus when Self is prosperous and Seal is strong, it does not matter (if officer) is overly strong, only that Officer has to be clear and pure, like

Because Ren is restraining Wu so Wu cannot hurt the Officer.

原文：有印而用伤食者，身强印旺，恐其太过，泄身以为秀气。如戊戌、乙卯、丙午、乙亥，李状元命也，若印浅身轻，而用层层伤食，则寒贫之局矣。

There's Seal that uses Hurting Officer or Food, when Self is strong and Seal is prosperous, it could be excessive, exhausting self becomes elegant Qi,

Chart of Lee, the person who scored the highest in the imperial examination, when Seal is shallow and Self is light with many outputs, the structure becomes cold and poor.


原文：有用偏官者，偏官本非美物，藉其生印，不得已而用之。故必身重印轻，或身轻印重，有所不足，始为有性。如茅状元命，己巳、癸酉、癸未、庚申，此身轻印重也。马参政命，壬寅、戊申、壬辰、壬寅，此身重印轻也。若身印并重而用七煞，非孤则贫矣。

There's (structure) that uses Indirect Officer, Indirect Officer is originally not something good, but when there's no other choice, it must be used. Thus, Self must be heavy and Seal light, or Self light and Seal heavy, what is there (should be) inadequate, then it has temperament (meaning the chart can behave in a good way).

Like the chart of Mr Mao, who scored first in the imperial exam,

This is light Self with heavy Seal.

This is heavy Self with light Seal.

If Self and Seal are both strong, and uses 7K, the person would either be alone / solitary or poor.


原文：有用煞而兼带伤食者，则用煞而有制，生身而有泄，不论身旺印重，皆为贵格。

There's a chart that uses Devil and carries the outputs, that is using Devil and it is restrained, engenders Self and there's exhaustion, it does not matter is Self is prosperous and Seal is heavy, all are regarded as noble structure.


原文：有印多而用财者，印重身强，透财以抑太过，权而用之，只要根深，无防财破。如辛酉、丙申、壬申、辛亥，汪侍郎命是也。若印轻财重，又无劫财以救，则为贪财破印，贫贱之局也。

There are charts with many Seals that use Wealth, that Seal is heavy and Self is strong, protruding Wealth would suppress the overly strong Seal, rightly used, when the root is deep, it does not matter if it is broken by Wealth.

Chart of Minister Wang. If Seal is light and Wealth is heavy without being rescued by Rob Wealth, it is regarded as 'greedy of Wealth and broken Seal', a lowly and poor structure.


原文：即或印重财轻而兼露伤食，财与食相生，轻而不轻，即可就富，亦不贵矣。然亦有带食而贵者，何也？如庚寅、乙酉、癸亥、丙辰，此牛监薄命，乙合庚而不生丙，所以为贵，若合财存食，又可类推矣。如己未、甲戌、辛未、癸巳，此合财存食之贵也。

And if Seal is heavy, Wealth is light with protruding outputs, Wealth and Seal mutually engendering, so light is not really light, the person can be rich but not noble. But there are also structures with protruding outputs that can be noble, why?

以上日干，皆喜见比肩疏通，忌见食伤销印生财，犯此，物运又临身印衰乡财旺之地，必然贪财坏印，剥官退职。
The Day stems as above, all likes Compare Shoulders to 'clear', does not favor Food or Hurting Officer to lock the Seal and engender Wealth, having this while LP goes to places where Seal is in decline while Wealth is prosperous, will leads to 'being greedy of Wealth and thus broken Seal', one would be stripped of his position (government official) or dismissed.

赋云：
The ode says:


金赖土生，土厚而金遭埋没。
Metal relies on Earth to be engendered, when Earth is thick. metal will be buried.


木从水养，水盛而木必漂流。
Wood is nourished by Water, when Water is strong, wood would float and drift.


火炎土燥，则不能生物（如己日得午之类）。
When Fire is blazing, Earth is parched and cannot engender anything.


刚金不能生水（如庚日得戌之类）。
Tough metal cannot engender Water (like Geng day seeing Xu etc)


旺土见旺火，逢此必主眼疾痈疽热病。
Prosperous Earth meeting prosperous Fire, seeing this denotes eye disease, ulcers or fever.
(Trey: Fever - diseases that related to fever like typhoid fever, dengue fever or yellow fever etc)


粪土不能生金，燥金不能生水，绝水不能生木，遇此宜详看，不可一概印绶论。
Dung earth cannot engender Metal, parched metal cannot engender water, reposed water cannot engender wood, cases like this should be analyzed in detail, these should not all be analyzed as Seal.


若水得金生而逢秋，乃水清金白，秀丽堪夸，一水三金，号曰体全之象。
If water gets engendered by Metal and meets Autumn, then Water is clear and Metal is white, elegance and beauty worthy of high praises, one Water and three Metal, this is called the image of 'complete form'


火得木生而值春，为木秀火明，发焰红绿，见金则伤其木，灭火之焰。
Fire gets engendered by wood and is born in Spring, wood is elegant and fire is bright, glowing in red and green, seeing Metal would injure the wood, and extinguish the glow of the fire.


是金木二印，多者俱作吉论。
For metal and wood Seal, when there are many, they should be analyzed as auspicious.


若火印多者火燥土烈，水印多者水泛木浮，土印多者土重金埋，皆不为吉。
If Fire Seal is Abundant, Earth is cracked, if Water Seal is rampant, Wood floats, if Earth Seal is heavy, Metal is buried, all these are not auspicious.

经云：官刑不犯，印绶与天德同宫。
The classic says: One is not punished by law, Seal and ribbon is in the same court as TianDe.


又曰：素食慈心，印绶喜逢于天德。
Also: Being a vegetarian with a compassionate heart, Seal and ribbon likes to meet TianDe.


如孟重都宪：乙亥、丁亥、乙丑、丙戌，是印绶与天德同宫。

此格大要生旺，最忌死绝。
Structures like this must have the Qi or Birth and Prosperity, and most unfavorable are Qi of Death and Extinction.


如果乙见亥子为印，见金成其仁义生养，印元见土则混杂其格，运行西北，官印为福，若时引归卯辰巳地，或运行此地，财印归死绝，流年再遇财克印，决入黄泉无疑。
If Yi sees Hai or Zi as Seal, seeing Metal would complete its 'benevolence and righteousness engendering and nurturing', if Seal sees Earth then it would contaminate the structure, when Luck goes to west, Officer and Seal are blessings, if the EBs of Month, Day and Hour are Mao, Chen or Si, or if the Luck Pillar goes to these EB, Wealth and Seal are returned to Death and Extinction, and if LiuNian (Small Luck) seeing Wealth countering Seal again, it would definitely result in death of that person.


印绶合格，行大运最忌印绶变合，遇地支三合，或变为伤局，或变成财局，或变成煞局，最为不吉。
Seal and ribbon combination structure, it is most unfavorable when Seal is combined, or the EBs has the triple combo, or if it changes to become a Hurting frame, or become a Wealth frame or become a Devil frame, that is most inauspicious.

印绶，如甲日遇子月为正印，亥月为偏印，最喜逢天月德，子天德在巽，月德在壬，亥天德在乙，月德在甲，时要见酉辛正官为妙，或申庚七煞，却要见比劫助身，合煞为贵，畏戊己财星损印，忌丙丁食伤生财破印；

Seal and ribbon is like Jia DM seeing Zi month as the True Seal, Hai month as the Indirect Seal, most auspicious when it sees Heavenly Virtue (TianDe) and Lunar Virtue (YueDe) (GuiRen / noblemen), For Zi, TianDe is at Xun, YueDe is at Ren. As for Hai, TianDe is at Yi, YueDe is at Jia, it should see Xin You Direct Officer in the hour pillar to be good, or Shen and Geng 7K, and that requires parallel and rob wealth to assists DM or to combine with 7K in order to be noble. Bing DM sees the month of Mao as the True Seal, TianDe is at Kun, YueDe is at Jia, the month of Yin as Indirect Seal, TianDe at Ding and YueDe at Bing, likes to see Zi and Gui as Direct Officer or Ren and Hai as 7K, which requires Compare and Rob to assist DM or combine with 7K, fears Shen Geng You and Xin Wealth stars to break the Seal, fears Wu and Ji Food and Hurt to engender Wealth that breaks the Seal.

For Ding seeing the month of Yin and Mao, the favorable and unfavorable entities are the same as Bing.

Ren DM born in the month of You as the true Seal, TianDe is at Yin, YueDe is at Geng, the month of Shen as Indirect Seal, TianDe at Gui, YueDe at Ren, likes to see Si and Wu Direct Officer on Hour Pillar or Ji and Wu (EB) as Direct Officer or Si and Wu (HS) as 7K, which requires seeing Compare or Rob to assist self or combine with Devil, does not favor Bing and Ding prosperous Wealth to break the Seal, nor Jia and Yi output which would engender wealth to break the Seal.


癸生申酉月，喜忌与壬同。

For Gui born in the month of Shen and You, the favorable and unfavorable entities are the same as Ren.

BaZi: NaYin 石榴木 Wood of Pomegranate - Year Pillar Geng Shen and Xin You

庚申, 辛酉 石榴木
Geng Shen, Xin You - Wood of pomegranate


石榴木者，性辛如姜，花红似火，数颗枝头，累累多子，房内莹莹，干支纯金而纳音属木，乃木之变者也。
Pomegranate wood, it's nature is hot (of taste) like ginger, its flower is red like fire, a few fruits on a stem, clustered with many seeds, inside the compartment is like cluster of gems, Stem and Branch are purely metal but NaYin belongs to wood, that how this wood is different.


可以移盆内而妆做山，故喜成器之土，以为根基，城头为上，屋上次之，然必阴阳交见，则丙辛丁庚互官，戊辛已寅互印，主吉；

It can be moved into a pot and adorned to be a hill (??), thus it likes useful earth as the root foundation, castle earth is good, house earth is second, and it must see that yin and yang are both seen, thus Bing  for Xin and Ding for Geng are the Officer respectively, Wu for Xin and Si Yin are Seal, denotes auspiciousness.


路、壁、驿、砂四土有山助之，亦吉，若无何用？
Road, Wall, Post and Sand earths are auspicious when they are assisted by mountain, otherwise what use they can be?

见金砂中最吉，泊金干支水木而纳音金，榴木干支金而纳音木，皆脱去本性而互换归旺，以木旺寅卯，金旺申酉，各得其位，谓之功侔造化格，主大贵；
Seeing metal within sand is most auspicious, foil metal has water and wood as stem and branch but nayin is metal, pomegranate wood has stem and branch as metal but nayin as wood, that is (these pillars) take off their original characteristics and they support each other to be prosperous, as wood is prosperous in Yin and Mao, Metal is prosperous in Shen and You, each of them obtain their places (getting support in terms of Stem, Branch and Nayin), this is named the structure of 'equally meritorious deed' , denotes great nobility.

海中乙丑为山，更逢水助则吉，或壁上，城头，亦得剑锋，就位相克，最凶，若先有砂金，能制其毒，亦不为害。
(Metal) Inside Sea has Yi Chou as mountain, thus getting support from water is auspicious, or Wall, Castle and also getting Sword edge which is in place to counter, is most inauspicious, if there is Sand metal, it can control its venom and it will not be harmful.

水见天河，雨露相滋，井泉、溪涧，清水浇灌，大海太泛滥，非贫则夭，有艮土稍得。
(As for) water, seeing Heavenly River, rain and dew nourishes (wood), well and spring,  stream and nourishing, these are fresh water for irrigation, great ocean is over flooding, denotes either poverty or die young, if there's Gen earth, then it's a little okay.

太阳、霹雳二火虽喜，不宜并见；
The sun and lightning fire are both auspicious, but they should not be seen together.

炉中寅卯旺位，本吉，再加别火则凶。
Inside furnace fire, Yin and Mao are prosperous places, so it's auspicious, but if there are other fire it is not auspicious.

若此木生于五月，日时止带一火，谓之石榴喷火，主贵。
If this wood is born in the fifth month, only one fire is seen on either day or  hour pillar (as Nayin), it is called 'pomegranate puffing fire', denotes nobility.

Trey: What a strange name, can I invent a structure called Trey puffing fire?

桑柘、大林、杨柳三木皆喜见之，见大林戊辰脱体，见杨柳花红柳绿，皆主功名；
Mulberry and Maclura, Great Forest, Poplars and Willows, these 3 woods are auspicious to be seen, seeing great forest Wu Chen, (pomegranate) sheds its form, seeing Poplars and Willows is called 'Red flower Green Willow', these denote fame and glory.

见桑柘癸丑为山，见松柏则强，见平地则大，若无别物夹杂，则禄绕红围，亦主富贵，如得城土为基，水运为助，享福优游，最为长久。
Seeing Mulberry and Maclura Gui Chou as mountain, seeing Pines and Cypress (pomegranate) becomes strong, seeing Flat Land becomes great, if there's no other thing to contaminate, then it's 'fortune spiralling and bonus encircling' (flowery words which mean getting a lot of money), it also denotes Wealth and nobility, if there is Castle Earth as foundation and water to support, one can leisurely enjoy wealth and blessings, which are very long lasting.

BaZi: SMTH 论印绶 Discuss Seal and Ribbon

Seal and ribbon used to be the proof of authority 

印绶者，乃五行生我之名。

Seal and Ribbon is the name given to the element that engenders myself.


如甲乙在亥子月，丙丁在寅卯月之类，乃我气之源，为生气，为父母，能护我官星，使无伤克，譬人生得物相助相养，受现成之福，岂不为妙？

Like Jia and Yi in the month of Hai or Zi, Bing and Ding in the month of Yin and Mao etc, it's the source of my Qi, it is engendering Qi, it denotes parents, it can protect my Officer star, so that it cannot be harmed or countered, it's like in a person's life he gets to be supported and nurtured, he enjoys blessing that is readily available, how is that not wonderful?



此格主聪明，多智慧，性慈惠，语善良，迟讷体，貌丰厚，能饮食，平生少病，不逢凶横，但吝财耳，为官多为正官，受宣敕不拘文武，皆掌印信，喜官星，以官能生印。

The person of this structure is intelligent, wise, compassionate, good with words (talk kindly), slow and large body, round and thick face, can drink and eat (a lot), does not get sick much in his life, does not encounter inauspicious or unexpected accidents, but is stingy (in terms of money), if the person is a government official, he is a just official, receive or announce imperial orders that could be civil or military, for all that gets the integrity of the Seal, likes Officer star, as Officer engenders Seal.



经云：印赖官生。

The classics says: Seal relies on Officer to be engendered.


又云：有官无印，即非真官，有印有官，方成厚福是也。

Also: Officer without Seal is not the true Officer, with Officer and Seal, on can have abundant blessings.



忌财星，以财能破印。

Dreads Wealth star, as Wealth can break the Seal


经云：印绶生月岁时，忌见财星，运入财乡，却宜退身避位是也。

The classics says: Seal and ribbon born in the Month, Year or Hour, dreads Wealth star, if Luck goes to places of Wealth, it's beneficial to resign or retreat from one's position.



岁运同论，印绶不逢损伤，多受父母倚荫，资财见成，安享富贵，诸命相比，当以印绶多者为上，月最要，日时次之，年干虽重，须归禄月日时，方可取用，若年露印，月日时无，亦不济事。

Annual Pillar is analyzed similarly, if Seal and ribbon are not damaged, denotes protection and support from parents, investment will give return, enjoys wealth and nobility in peace, relatively speaking, those with many Seals are better, month (pillar) is the most important, day and hour (pillar) are secondary, as for Year Pillar, even though it is heavy, it must return prosperity to Month, Day and Hour, only then it can be used, if Seal is exposed in Year, but it is not in Month, Day and Hour, it is not useful.



四柱元有官星为妙，若印绶少，官鬼多，或入他格，又不可专言印绶，若印绶复遇拱禄、专禄、归禄、鼠贵、夹贵、时贵等格，尤为奇特，但主少子或无子，印绶多者清孤。

Officer star's presence in the natal chart is good, if Seal and ribbon are few, Officer and Devil many, or if it fit into other structures, it cannot be analyzed solely as Seal and ribbon (structure), if Seal and ribbon meets 'Arching prosperity', 'Focused prosperity', 'Returned prosperity', 'Rat's nobility', 'Clipping nobility', 'Hour nobility' structures etc, it is especially auspicious, but it also represent having few children or childless, many Seal and ribbon people are quiet and lonely.

凡印绶，喜七煞，但煞不可太多，多则伤身。

Seal and ribbon likes 7K, but Devil must not be too many, too many (7k) injure Self.



原无七煞，行运遇之则发；原有七煞，行财运，或印绶死绝，或临墓地，皆凶。

If the natal chart has no 7K, seeing 7K in the Luck Pillar will give success; if the natal chart already has 7K, seeing Wealth in LP, or when Seal and ribbon are dead and extinct, or arriving into graves, are all inauspicious.


经云：煞能生印，畏行财乡，破印助鬼，决主不详。

The classics says: Devil can engender Seal, but it fears to go to Wealth's land, as it breaks the Seal and assists the Devil, and that is inauspicious.


凡格喜身旺，惟印绶喜生弱，若元局带财伤印，运行比劫身旺，亦能发福，无则不宜，如无官煞财神，又行身旺，主平常。

When (most) structures likes DM to be strong, only the Seal and ribbon (structure) likes DM to be weak, if the original structure carries Wealth which injured the Seal, going through Luck with Parallels and Rob Wealth or prosperous Self can make one to become rich, if there's no such LP then it is not good, like if there's no Officer, Devil or Wealth star,or Luck pillar is where Self is prosperous, it denotes ordinary.

Travel: Kashmir - Paradise in distress.

My recent travel brought me to a region in northern India, Kashmir, literally heaven on earth. It really was a surprise travel arranged by Mr Bear, well, even Mr Bear didn't know we were going to Kashmir. He asked his travel agent friend to arrange for a trip to Ladakh but somehow, there was a mistake in the arrangement and we ended up in Kashmir.

We landed from Mumbai in Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir, there were more security personnels in the airport than flight passengers and airport workers combined. Kashmir has been portrayed by the western and Indian media as an unsafe place with riots and skirmishes between India and Pakistan. We didn't see any of this. With that many police and army crowding the city, Srinagar is possibly the safest city in the world.

On the first few nights we were put to stay in a boathouse in the middle of Dal Lake. It was my first time staying in a boathouse, I've heard about the moving boathouse hotels in Kerala but the ones in Srinagar are stationary. It was a delightful experience, except the time when I had to shower and brush my teeth. The water smelled funny because it was from the lake.

Dal lake is the most beautiful lake I've seen (not that I've seen many lakes before), this lake has a magical air around it and every inch of the lake is teeming with life. I thought they have managed to conserve the ecosystem of the lake by not using motorized boat.

Srinagar was entirely clean, something I did not expect because Jaipur, Agra, Delhi and Mumbai has taught me otherwise. I thought if there's one place that I would go back to visit again in India, it would certainly be Kashmir.

One the second day, we were brought to visit several Mughal gardens around Srinagar. There really are many flower gardens in such a small city and they look almost alike but we were happy to be close to nature and to breath clean and fresh air, something that we could not do in Mumbai. The mountainous background were breathtaking to look upon.

After spending the entire morning looking at flowers, we were taken to see the old town and an imposing 750 year old mosque that was build by Shah Hamdan, a wooden mosque that I thought was as elegant as Sultanahmet or Suleymaniye of Istanbul. On the way, we passed by a part of  Dal lake that was full of Lotus.

 

And we had Kashmiri ice-cream!

And that wrapped up our first 2 days in Srinagar!

PS: I thought Kashmiri food was delicious.

BaZi: SMTH 年上七煞 - 7K on Year Pillar

经云：年逢贵气，不用制伏，喜日主健旺，羊刃相合，柱中带财，更行财运，发福清秀。

The classics says: When the Year Pillar sees noble Qi, it desires DM to be healthy and prosperous, YangRen to combine, and the present of Wealth in the pillars, and furthermore going through Wealth Luck period, one will be very successful in a delicate and beautiful way (?)

最忌身衰，盖七煞乃小人之象，既居祖宗之位，如朝廷老臣，祖父老仆，日主健旺，老仆则尽力以事幼主，日主衰弱，不能与小人为主，何肯尽力事之？反成害已之物。

Most dreadful is weak DM, as 7K is like villain, when it's residing at the ancestor's place (Year Pillar), it's like old ministers in the court, the old servant who served the grandfather, when DM is healthy and prosperous, the old servant would strive to serve his young master, if DM is weak, it cannot control the old servant, so how can the old servant strive to serve him? it become something harmful to the DM instead.

年干见此，必主出身寒微，四柱行运有情，主寒门生贵子，若煞旺身衰，冲刑太过，必主贫穷，至重者带孝遭刑。

When the Year Stem sees this, it denotes coming from a humble background, if the 4 pillars and LP are affectionate, denotes the poor and humble family born a noble child (that the DM is the noble child), if the Devil is prosperous and Self is weak, clashing and punishment are excessive, denotes poverty, and the worst case could be the death of parents or getting punishment (from the government)

又曰：岁煞一位不宜制，四柱重见却宜制，日主生旺，制伏略多，喜行煞旺地，制伏太过，或煞旺身衰，官煞混杂，岁运如之，碌碌之辈。

Also it is said: When there's only 1 Devil on Year Pillar, it is not beneficial to be restrained, when there is more than one, then it is good to be restraint, when DM is prosperous, and there are too many restraints, then it is auspicious for Luck Pillar to be places where Devil is prosperous, if it is excessively restrained, or prosperous devil and weak Self, or Officer and Devil Mixed, or the LP comes to be like this, it's just ordinary (mediocre) people. 

若制伏不及，运至身衰煞旺乡，必生祸患。一命戊戌、庚申、壬午、癸卯，戊与癸合，卯与戌合，壬坐午支，财官俱备，为贵。

If the restraint is insufficient, and LP goes to a place where DM is weak and Devil is strong, the it must denotes a disaster or suffering (from illness). A chart:

Gui       Ren      Geng       Wu

Mao     Wu       Shen       Xu

Wu is combined with Gui, Mao is combined with Xu, Ren sitting on EB Wu, Wealth and Officer are readied, thus it is noble.  

古歌云：岁德壬来见戌年，财旺身强禄自然，更得运行财旺地，为人忠聪慧又忠贤。

The ancient song says: Year Virtue Ren comes to see Xu Year, Wealth is prosperous Self is strong and the fortune is natural, and when Luck Pillar goes to place where Wealth is prosperous, one is loyal, intelligent, wise and virtuous. 

又：年干七煞莫言凶，制合为权最有功，若得身强无忌破，此身多入禁庭中。

Also: 7K on year stem should not be analyzed as inauspicious, when it is restraint or combined it has a lot of  achievement, it Self is strong and without unfavorable (god) or breakage, this person is most probably a person who goes to the forbidden court (government court) 

又：岁伤日干不和同，须要干支制伏重，煞旺喜行身旺地，初年难免一场凶。

Also: Year injuring Day stem is not the same, the stems and branches must have heavy restraints, when Devil is prosperous, it is good for Self to be prosperous, but in the early years it is difficult to avoid a case of calamity. 

BaZi: A list of Chart Structures

Chart structures are categorized into 2 main groups - common structures and special structures. Special structures are sometimes called 杂格 miscellaneous structure. There are many of them. Common structures are the structures that can be established from the Month Decree. If the Month EB fails to produce any Useful God, or the intention of the chart is inclined towards a certain special structure, only then the chart  can be considered to have fallen under certain special structure. Thus the saying 提纲有用提纲重, when the keypoint (Month EB) has 'Use', keypoint is heavy (more important).

What is the use of knowing the structure?

1. To know which God or element is favorable and unfavorable.
2. To grade a chart, a person which a good grade chart is very likely to be successful.
3. To analyze the Luck Pillars, based on point 1.

7K on Hour Pillar

《喜忌篇》云：若乃时逢七煞，见之未必为凶，月制干强，其煞反为权印。

Xi Ji Pian says: If the hour has a 7K, it does not necessarily mean it's inauspicious. if the month restraining stem is strong, the devil becomes authority.

经云：时上偏官身要强，阳刃冲刑煞敢当，制多要行煞旺运，煞多制少必为殃。

Classics says: Indirect Officer on the hour pillar needs Self to be strong, when YangRen clashes or punishes the devil can equally match, if there are many restraints (EG / HO) it desires luck for Devil to be prosperous, if there are many Devils and little restrains, it must be disastrous.

盖时上偏官，要干上透出，只一位为妙，年月日重见，反主辛苦劳碌，若身旺，煞制太过，喜行煞旺运，或三合煞运，如无制伏，要行制伏运方发。

For Indirect Officer on hour pillar, it must protrude in the stem, only one 7K is needed to be good, otherwise, if 7K is also seen on Year, Month or Day?, it means a laborious life.If self is prosperous and 7K is excessively restrained, it's good for LP to support 7K (where 7K can be prosperous), or a triple combination for the Devil, if there's no restrain, then seeing restraint in LP is good.

但忌身弱，纵得运扶持发福，运过依旧不济。

It is inauspicious for self to be weak, when LP supports self, one can be successful, but after the luck, it is not good just as before the LP.

又曰：时上偏官，不怕冲刃，为人性重刚直不屈，煞无根要坐旺宫，有根不宜（财有，煞之根），若一位七煞，却有两三重制伏，纵文过李、杜，终难显达。

Also it is said: Indirect Officer on Hour Pillar is not afraid of clashing YangRen, one will be upright, outspoken and unyielding, if devil has not root, it should sits on prosperous palace, if there are roots, then it's not beneficial (Wealth has, the root of 7K), if there's on one 7K, and there are 2 or 3 restraints, even if one is more scholarly than Li or Du, it is difficult to be prominent.

《独步》云：时煞无根，煞旺最贵，时煞多根，煞旺不和。

DuBu says: Hour Devil has no root, prosperous 7K is most noble, Hour Devil has many roots, prosperous Devil is no peace.

《惊神赋》云：时上偏官，有制，晚子英奇。

Jing Shen Fu says: Indirect Officer on Hour Pillar, in one's late years, the children would be outstanding.

古歌云：时上偏官喜刃冲，身强制伏禄丰隆，正官若也来相混，身弱财多主困穷。

Old songs say: Indirect Officer on Hour Pillar likes YangRen to clash, Strong Self and restraints denotes abundance of Fortune, if Direct Officer is also present, with weak DM, denotes difficulty and poverty.

又：时上偏官一位强，日辰自旺喜非常，有财有印多财禄，定是天生作栋梁。

Also: One Indirect Officer on hour pillar is strong, when day and time prospers self, it is exceptionally auspicious, with Wealth and Seal, one will much wealth and fortune, that one is destined to be a person of heavy responsibility.

又：时逢七煞是偏官，有制身强好命者，制过喜行煞旺运，三合得地发何难。

Also: 7K on hour pillar is Indirect Officer, with restraints and strong Self, one will have a good life, if 7K is overly restrained it is good for LP to support 7K, with a triple combination it is not difficult to be successful.

又：时逢七煞本无儿，此理人间仔细推，底月时中如有制，定知有子贵而迟。

Also: 7K on hour pillar originally will be childless, but this theory has to be analyzed attentively, under the month or hour if there is restraint, then it must be known that one will have children and nobility comes lately.

BaZi: The Zi hour controversy.

Zi hour controversy - New day starts at 11 pm or 12 pm?  

I wanted to write this since a long time ago but I have totally forgotten, until I saw Agnes comment recently. So thanks to Agnes for bringing this subject up.

I am an unfortunate person who was born around 11.45pm LAT in my hometown, so I have been researching into this subject quite extensively to figure out my correct Day Pillar. Though I am not entirely sure, I am convinced that my DM is Ji earth (which is the previous day) and not Geng metal (the next day).

There are 3 common positions BaZi practitioners take regarding Zi hour.

1. Many practitioners think the new day begins at the beginning of Zi hour, which is 11.00pm. There are only 12 Hour Pillars in a particular day, if a person is born at 11.00pm on Tuesday, he is considered to be born on Wednesday.

2. The second viewpoint is that the new day begins at 12.00 am, so Zi hour is divided in Early Zi hour and Late Zi hour. Early Zi hour belongs to the previous day and Late Zi hour will be on the next day. This method has 13 Hour Pillars in a particular day.

3. The third viewpoint is that Zi hour controversy will never be resolved, so Zi hour charts cannot be read. No divination for Zi hour - 子时不占

I take the second position, that Zi hour is divided into early Zi 子初 which belongs to the previous day and middle Zi 子半 12.00 am which is the beginning of the next day.

People who take the first position would argue that the ancient Chinese have always thought that the new day begins when Zi hour begins. That this is the traditional point of view. However, this is not entirely true. The time system had been changing since the Xia dynasty.

The book of Han (of Han dynasty) has a record that says:

夏以十三月為正，色尚黑，以平旦為朔。
Xia (dynasty) (used) the thirteen month as the true (first month), color still black, with PingDan (Yin hour) as the beginning.

殷以十二月為正，色尚白，以雞鳴為朔。
Yin (Shang dynasty) used the twelfth month as the true, color still white, with the roosters crow (Chou hour) as the beginning.

周以十一月為正，色尚赤，以夜半為朔。
Zhou (dynasty) used the eleventh as the true, color still vermilion, with the half of night (middle of Zi hour) as the beginning.

According to the history book, in Xia dynasty (2100 - 1600 BC), Yin hour was regarded as the beginning of the new day. While in Shang dynasty (1600 -1048 BC), Chou hour was regarded as the beginning of the new day and in Zhou dynasty which lasted from 1045 - 256 BC, the middle of Zi hour was regarded as the beginning of the new day. Now it is apparent that the ancient Chinese did not traditionally regard Zi hour as the beginning of the new day.

During Tang dynasty, Li ChunFeng (astronomer and mathematician), who was tasked with creating a new calendar system 麟德历 (Lin De Calender) wrote in the new book of Tang 新唐书, a phrase that says;

古历分日，起于子半

The ancient calendar divides the day, with the half of Zi as the beginning.

As far as I know, the knowledge of Life analysis began sometime in the Spring and Autumn period, around the time when Gui GuZi created the NaYin system. If back in those days they were using the middle of Zi hour as the beginning of the new day, how could we shift that to the early Zi hour?

If we look into Classical BaZi books, Master Wan YuWu, who authored SMTH (which I translate a lot in this blog), referred this subject to 革象新书 (The new book of Ge Xiang), a book from Yuan Dynasty that says:

若子时，则上半时在夜半前，属昨日，下半时在夜半后，属今日.
If it is Zi hour, the half of the hour before the middle of the night belongs to the previous day, the later half after the middle of the night, belongs to today.

And therefore, I rest my case.
